Painted on-site along the beautiful Sammamish River Trail in Woodinville, WA on a warm, sunny day in September. I had so many wonderful conversations with people who stopped to take a look at the work in progress. I live right along the trail and often walk my dog here, but this was my first time staying in one place and observing nature. I saw two incredible cranes take flight, which I hope to paint in the future.
Oil on acid-free, archival linen panels mounted on non-warping 3mm (1/8") MDF Wood board. 12 × 9 inches, perfect for popping in a frame of your choice. Here are a couple of options: Blick Cambridge Plein Air Frame, Museum Plein Air Frame.
Plein air is a French term that translates to "open air." It refers to the act of painting or drawing outdoors, directly observing the landscape, people, or surroundings rather than working in a studio. Plein air artists aim to capture the natural light, colors, and atmosphere of the scene, often working quickly to reflect the changing conditions, such as light and weather.
The plein air movement became especially prominent in the 19th century, with artists like Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Camille Pissarro leading the way. It marked a shift from traditional studio painting, emphasizing spontaneous, direct observation and a focus on the natural world.
